Special Reports:

COVID-19 vaccines

< Back to special reports

The first batch of COVID vaccines touched down in South Africa in February 2021. Health workers were the first to get a jab under the Sisonke study. But even before the country had bought any jabs, our reporters were writing about the logistics and the politics of the project. If you want to know how well the vaccines work, how the different jabs compare or what it takes to create a vaccine from research, to regulation, to rollout, you’re at the right place.

Rosaline gets vaxxed

Rosaline Daniel is Bhekisisa’s trusted programme manager — she keeps Bhekisisa trudging along like a well oiled machine. When our Rosaline had to tap out of her Bhekisisa duties for a while to recover from COVID, it meant more than the team being rudderless for a few days, it also meant that Rosaline had to postpone her appointment for her vaccine. With the 30 days waiting period out of the way and Rosaline free of any symptoms, she went to Discovery’s Sandton site for her first jab.

Mia gets vaxxed

Twitter came through for our Mia Malan. After receiving her first Pfizer jab at the Dischem in Fourways she heard through the Twitter grapevine that a drive-through vaccination site had been set up at the Houghton Masjid.
Our Mia was in and out within minutes And how did the second jab compare to her first? Watch this short clip and find out. Have you had your second jab yet? Share your vax experience with us. Tag us on social media and use the hashtag #VaxxedSA.

Joan gets vaxxed

Our senior health reporter Joan van Dyk got her jab at Parkhurst’s Recreation Centre on August 6. Joan was in and out in no time with the queue moving swiftly.
Our Joan felt a bit of pain in her arm at the injection site and fatigue kicked in after her shot, but after a day, her side-effects had subsided.
We want to hear from you. Tell us about your vaccination experience. Tag us on social media and use the hashtag #VaxxedSA
